A Sweet Christmas Anniversary Sends Sam and Sophie to Salzburg
Great American Family is giving this one the day after Thanksgiving, which tells you something about how the network rates it.
A Sweet Christmas Anniversary premieres Friday, November 27 at 8p on Great American Family and GFAM+, with a world premiere streaming on Great American Pure Flix three days earlier, Tuesday, November 24. Almost every original this season lands on a Saturday or a Sunday. This one gets its own Friday, in the middle of the biggest television weekend of the year.
It is the third chapter of the Home Sweet Christmas story, Candace Cameron Bure and Cameron Mathison are back as Sophie and Sam, and for the first time the two of them leave the country.
Salzburg is doing a lot of the work here
The film shot in Europe, which is new ground for Bure. “I’ve never filmed in Europe before, so it is very exciting,” she said while production was underway. “Sam and Sophie will take a European Christmas vacation to celebrate their first anniversary. They’ll stroll through the picturesque Christmas markets, castles and take in the beauty of Christmas in a way that only Europe has to offer.”
Salzburg is an inspired choice. The old town is baroque and compact, the Christmas markets set up in the squares under the cathedral, and the place already looks like a set decorator got there first. Great American Media’s own description calls it “a sprawling Christmas postcard town adorned with decorations and lights, a place one can almost smell the scents of mulled wine and gingerbread.” For a franchise whose whole appeal is coziness, pointing a camera at an Austrian Christkindlmarkt is not a bad plan.
The anniversary trip turns into something else
Sophie and Sam go away for a romantic first year. That lasts about as long as you would expect.
Per the official synopsis, the getaway “quickly transforms into a lavish royal mystery when a charismatic hotelier draws the couple into a world of festive surprises.” Sophie uncovers a hidden connection to a beloved Christmas song, and the two of them have to work through the host’s twists to protect what they have and, as these movies always land it, rediscover what Christmas is actually for.
The carol detail is the part I keep turning over. A beloved Christmas song, a hidden connection, and a story set about twenty minutes from the village where “Silent Night” was first performed. Nobody has confirmed that is the song. But if you had to guess, you would guess that one.
A franchise that kept going past the wedding
Most of the genre stops at the first kiss. These films kept going, and the third one is built around a first anniversary rather than a first meeting.
Bill Abbott, president and CEO of Great American Media, put it this way when the film was announced: “With the third chapter of Sam and Sophie’s story, we want to capture how love evolves, how it deepens, challenges, and ultimately, strengthens the bond between two people.”
Behind the camera it is a Syrup Studios production in association with CandyRock Entertainment, the company Bure runs with Ford Englerth and Jeffery Brooks. Paula Elle directs, Rob Lycar produces, and the screenplay is by Robin Dunne and Arcade Riley. Dunne’s name will look familiar if you watch a lot of these, since he has been acting in the genre for years. Bure is an executive producer, and she is having a busy season: two films in front of the camera and a third she produced.
One loose end worth knowing about
When Great American Media first announced this movie in November 2025, the plan was different. The press release called it the company’s second theatrical film and said it would have a “World Premiere in theaters only in 2026,” through the same Fathom Entertainment partnership that put Another Sweet Christmas in cinemas for three days that same month.
The slate release from September 22 does not mention theaters or Fathom anywhere, and the film is not on Fathom’s published calendar. Instead it has the Pure Flix and Great American Family dates above. Nobody has said the theatrical plan was dropped, only that the network has stopped talking about it. If a limited cinema run does get announced on top of the November dates, we will add it here.
How to watch
Stream it on Great American Pure Flix from Tuesday, November 24, or watch it on Great American Family and GFAM+ on Friday, November 27 at 8p.
For everything else this season, our Great American Christmas 2026 lineup has all eighteen films with dates, and the 2026 preview keeps Great American Family next to Hallmark so you are not running two calendars. Bure’s other film this year, A Second Chance Christmas with Jonathan Scarfe, opens the whole season on October 10.
Sophie and Sam got a small town, then a second Christmas, and now an Austrian palace and a mystery. Whoever is plotting this franchise is clearly enjoying themselves, and the day after Thanksgiving is a good night to be inside anyway.
