Mr. & Mrs. Christmas Gives Pascale Hutton a New Leading Man

For about seven years, if you saw Pascale Hutton’s name on a Hallmark movie, you could usually guess who was standing next to her. Kavan Smith was her partner in The Perfect Bride and its sequel, My One and Only, You Had Me at Aloha and We Wish You a Married Christmas, on top of playing Rosemary and Lee Coulter on When Calls the Heart. Five films and a decade of a marriage on a hit series is a partnership, not a coincidence.

Mr. & Mrs. Christmas hands her somebody else. It premieres Sunday, October 18 at 8/7c, and her co-lead is Brendan Penny.

The town is called Pineway

Taylor Lewis is a holiday display expert, which is a real job and, in a Hallmark movie, a nearly perfect one. He is also a single dad, and he moves his two kids to Pineway a few weeks before Christmas looking for a fresh start. The town has a Christmas Market that used to be the anchor of its year and has since faded. Reviving it becomes his assignment.

Sophie Shaw is the accountant assigned to work with him, and depending on which version of Hallmark’s own copy you read, she is either his new colleague or his supervisor. She is practical where he is expansive, she is trying to prove she is ready for a leadership role, and she is going to have opinions about his budget.

Hallmark’s framing of the theme is that “embracing change may be the key to creating new traditions and new memories,” which is doing a lot of work for a movie about a man who professionally installs Christmas lights. The honest read is simpler: he wants the market to feel like something, she wants it to balance, and both of them are right.

Two of the most reliable people on the network

Hutton has played Rosemary on When Calls the Heart for eleven years, which makes her one of a very small group of actors the Hallmark audience has genuinely grown up with. Before that she led Arctic Air and recurred on Sanctuary, and she has a Gemini Award and a Leo Award on the shelf. Her movie list runs to roughly thirteen titles, including Recipe for Love, Summer of Dreams, Wedding of Dreams, The Christmas Cup and The Wish Swap. She executive produced You Had Me at Aloha.

Penny spent six seasons as Kevin O’Brien on Chesapeake Shores and four as Detective Brian Lucas on Motive. His Hallmark movie count sits somewhere north of seventeen depending on how you handle the In the Vineyard anthology, where he played Nate DeLuca opposite Rachael Leigh Cook across four films. He picked up a Leo Award nomination for A Little Christmas Charm.

No source shows the two of them sharing a screen before this, and neither one’s official bio mentions the other. Hallmark has not called it a first-time pairing either way, so treat it as a new combination rather than a confirmed debut.

The family connection running through opening weekend

Barbara Niven played Penny’s mother, Megan O’Brien, for all six seasons of Chesapeake Shores. She is in ’Tis the Season for Setups, which opens the season two nights before this one. And Daniel Lissing, who played Mountie Jack Thornton opposite Hutton’s Rosemary on When Calls the Heart, leads Forgotten Holiday the following Saturday.

So inside a nine-day stretch Hallmark is running the Chesapeake Shores mother, the Chesapeake Shores son, and two When Calls the Heart leads, all in different movies. If the first two weeks of this season feel oddly familiar in a good way, that is why.

What has not been released

Hallmark has not announced a director or a writer, has not cast the two children publicly, and has not put out a trailer. There is a photo gallery on the network’s site and a first-look still doing the rounds, and that is the extent of it so far. Anything you see naming additional cast is coming from aggregator sites without sourcing.

When to watch

Mr. & Mrs. Christmas premieres Sunday, October 18 at 8/7c on Hallmark Channel, streaming the next day on Hallmark+. It is the third premiere of the 17th Countdown to Christmas, after ’Tis the Season for Setups on Friday and Holiday Touchdown: A Bears Love Story on Saturday. The full 34-movie schedule is here.

Watching a network reshuffle its most dependable pairings is more interesting than it sounds. Hutton opposite Smith was comfortable, and comfortable is most of what this genre sells. Putting her opposite Penny is a small risk on a Sunday night in October, which is exactly where you take one.
