What If Christmas Is the Movie Lori Loughlin Spent Four Years Getting Made

Screenwriter Cara J. Russell showed Lori Loughlin a script about four years ago. It was built around a younger couple then. Loughlin liked it enough to take it on herself, and she spent the years since developing it and shopping it, moving it between networks, until producer Brad Krevoy helped get it in front of Hallmark. Julie Sherman Wolfe came in for a polish. Loughlin’s own line about it is short: “This one is close to me.”

What If Christmas premieres Sunday, October 25 at 8/7c. Most Christmas movies are assignments. This one is somebody’s project.

The premise is an old one and it still works

Erin has spent her marriage supporting her husband Adam’s career as a heart surgeon, mostly by running the Christmas charity galas at his hospitals. When Adam moves to a new hospital, that job quietly disappears. She is back in New York City with no gala to plan and nothing filling the space, and the thing that starts surfacing is what she gave up: fashion design, a long time ago, for good reasons that no longer feel like reasons.

Then someone gives her a peculiar heart-shaped Christmas ornament, and she wakes up somewhere else. In this version she took the other road. She is a world-famous designer. She has the career. Hallmark’s own preview page describes what she finds at the top of it as loneliness.

The shape of this story is familiar and the execution is the entire game. What gives it a chance is that the person at the center of it wanted to make it for four years.

Loughlin’s second Hallmark project of 2026

Hallmark viewers have a long history with her. She was in the When Calls the Heart pilot movie and played Abigail Stanton through six seasons of the series. She originated Jennifer Shannon and carried the Garage Sale Mystery franchise across sixteen films. Before that there was Meet My Mom, Northpole: Open for Christmas, Every Christmas Has a Story and Homegrown Christmas. Count the mysteries individually and she is somewhere around twenty-one Hallmark projects.

Hallmark and Loughlin parted ways in March 2019. She has since returned, and 2026 is the year that return became a full slate: Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder Takes the Stage premiered September 19 with her back as Jennifer Shannon, What If Christmas lands October 25, and she returns as Abigail Stanton in six episodes of When Calls the Heart season 14 in 2027.

For the specific viewer keeping track, this is her first Hallmark Christmas movie since Homegrown Christmas in 2018.

Tom Cavanagh is the genuinely unexpected part

Cavanagh has no previously reported Hallmark credits. His own Hallmark bio describes a career entirely in terms of network television, film and Broadway, which is a polite way of saying the network has not had him before.

What he has: the title role in NBC’s Ed, the small-town lawyer who bought a bowling alley, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Nine seasons on The CW’s The Flash playing Harrison Wells and Eobard Thawne and a small crowd of multiversal variants, plus directing episodes of both shows. Dan Dorian, Zach Braff’s brother, on Scrubs. Two Broadway runs including the Tony-winning Urinetown.

He grew up partly in Ghana, contracted malaria as a child, and works with the UN Foundation’s anti-malaria campaign. Loughlin has called him a dream co-star and described him as delightful and funny, which reads like someone who got the casting she wanted after four years of asking.

What exists so far

Hallmark has a preview video live for this one and a photo gallery running to fourteen images, which puts it ahead of most of the October slate on promotion. Cara J. Russell wrote and produces, Julie Sherman Wolfe did a subsequent pass, Brad Krevoy produces. No director has been announced, and no filming location or dates have been reported.

Three supporting names have surfaced through a single outlet, Jonathan Whittaker, Lyla Elliott and Marisa McIntyre, without character names. Hallmark’s own cast page still lists only Loughlin and Cavanagh.

When to watch

What If Christmas premieres Sunday, October 25 at 8/7c on Hallmark Channel, streaming the next day on Hallmark+. Encores run Monday October 26 at 6/5c and Thursday October 29 at 10/9c. It closes a weekend that starts with Winter Wonderlanes on Friday and Forgotten Holiday on Saturday. The full 2026 schedule is here.

A movie about a woman who set her own ambition aside, made by a woman who spent four years refusing to set this one aside, is the sort of symmetry you usually only get to claim after the fact. Here it was in the press notes before anyone had seen a frame.
